Biography
In January 2023, Jonathan Randazzo was appointed Principal Trombone of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan began his position with the SLSO at the start of the 2023-24 season.
Prior to this appointment, Jonathan served as Assistant Principal Trombone of the North Carolina Symphony for 11 years, a position he won while in pursuit of his Bachelor of Music degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. During the 2017/18 season, he performed as Acting-Principal Trombone with the North Carolina Symphony.
Jonathan was appointed Second Trombone of the Santa Fe Opera in August 2017 and served as Acting-Principal Trombone at the 10-week summer opera festival from 2021 to 2023. While spending the summers in Santa Fe, Jonathan was a regular participant in the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, where he performed with world-renowned conductors, soloists, and orchestral musicians.
Jonathan has also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony, and the North Carolina Opera. In 2024, Jonathan joined the Grand Teton Music Festival as Principal Trombone.
In addition to his orchestral career, Jonathan has a wide array of solo experience, including appearances with the North Carolina Symphony, the Triangle Brass Band, the UNCSA Wind Ensemble, as well as the NCMEA and NCBA Conference ensembles. Jonathan is scheduled to make his solo debut with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra during the 24/25 season, performing Joseph Turrin's Fandango for Solo Trumpet, Trombone, and Orchestra.
An avid teacher, Jonathan served as Adjunct Trombone Professor at NC State University from 2015-2022 and is currently in high demand as a private trombone instructor. He has been hired as a guest artist-clinician at DePaul University and the UNC School of the Arts, as well as at East Carolina, Gardner-Webb, and Appalachian State Universities. He is also a founding member of the Southwest Trombone Conference, an educational trombone workshop featuring masterclasses, sectionals, chamber music, and other performances.
Jonathan’s trombone teachers and mentors include Norman Bolter, former Second Trombonist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, James Markey of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic, and Willard Sprague, a local educator on Long Island. While in high school, Jonathan attended The Juilliard School Pre-College division program.
Jonathan currently resides in St. Louis with his wife Kate, who sings with the SLSO Chorus, and Minnie, their fun-loving pit bull. When the two of them aren’t engaged in music, they enjoy an active lifestyle at the gym and the great parks Missouri has to offer.
